Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
